SOCIAL POLICY WRITING
I have selected some work from my public policy courses for this page that relate to social policy. The first is an op-ed about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). I defend SNAP against those who claim it is a "freeloader" system. The second is a short piece about the future of Detroit. I was asked which social or economic problem I would address if I had adequate funding and support, and I selected to improve public services and infrastructure. In the brief page I defend my position and include photographs I took during our tour of the city. I picked these two pieces because I felt they were both shorter but conveyed the opinions I wanted to express and would not exhaust non-academic readers with their length. Social policy is largely driven by the "loudest" wants and needs of the constituents, and I wanted to provide pieces that could be effective in encouraging specific policies if they were distributed.
